The Solitary Reaper

Behold her, single in the field,

Yon solitary Highland Lass!
ওই দূরের একাকী পাহাড়ি মেয়েটি!
Reaping and singing by herself;
সে একাই ফসল কাটছে আর গান গাইছে।
Stop here, or gently pass!
থেমে শোনো, নাহলে খুব আস্তে চলে যাও।
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
সে একা শস্য কাটে ও গুচ্ছ বাঁধে।
And sings a melancholy strain;
আর বিষণ্ণ সুরে গান গায়।
O listen! for the Vale profound
ওহ্, শোনো! কারণ গভীর উপত্যকা
Is overflowing with the sound.
তার গানের শব্দে ভরে উঠেছে।
No Nightingale did ever chaunt
কোনো নাইটিঙ্গেলও কখনও
More welcome notes to weary bands
ক্লান্ত পথিকদের কাছে এত মধুর সুর
Of travellers in some shady haunt,
ছায়াময় কোনো আশ্রয়ে থাকা
Among Arabian sands:
আরবের মরুভূমির বুকে শোনায়নি।
A voice so thrilling ne’er was heard
এমন আবেগময় কণ্ঠস্বর কখনও শোনা যায়নি
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
বসন্তকালে কোকিলের ডাকেও নয়,
Breaking the silence of the seas
যা সাগরের নীরবতা ভেঙে দেয়
Among the farthest Hebrides.
দূরতম হেব্রিডিস দ্বীপপুঞ্জে।
Will no one tell me what she sings?—
কেউ কি আমাকে বলবে, সে কী নিয়ে গান গায়?
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
হয়তো তার করুণ সুর বয়ে আনে
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
পুরোনো, দুঃখের, দূরের ঘটনার কথা,
And battles long ago:
আর বহু আগের যুদ্ধের কাহিনি।
Or is it some more humble lay,
নাকি তা আরও সাধারণ কোনো গান,
Familiar matter of to-day?
আজকের দিনের পরিচিত বিষয় নিয়ে?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
জীবনের স্বাভাবিক দুঃখ, ক্ষতি বা যন্ত্রণা,
That has been, and may be again?
যা হয়েছে, আবারও হতে পারে?
Whate’er the theme, the Maiden sang
বিষয় যাই হোক, কিশোরীটি গান গাইছিল
As if her song could have no ending;
যেন তার গানের কোনো শেষ নেই।
I saw her singing at her work,
আমি তাকে কাজ করতে করতেই গান গাইতে দেখলাম,
And o’er the sickle bending;—
হাসুয়ার ওপর ঝুঁকে পড়ে।
I listened, motionless and still;
আমি স্থির ও নিশ্চল হয়ে শুনলাম।
And, as I mounted up the hill,
আর পাহাড় বেয়ে ওপরে উঠতে উঠতে,
The music in my heart I bore,
সেই সুর আমি হৃদয়ে বহন করলাম,
Long after it was heard no more.
গান থেমে যাওয়ার অনেক পরেও।
