Urban Waste Management and Its Challenges

Kolkata, 11 December: Urban waste management has become a serious issue in many cities, affecting public health and the environment. Rapid urbanization and population growth are generating enormous amounts of solid waste, which are often improperly disposed of. The main causes include lack of awareness, inefficient collection systems, and industrial waste. Its effects are visible in clogged drains, water contamination, foul odors, and increased disease outbreaks. Experts warn that without proper management, cities will face severe sanitation and health crises. Governments and NGOs are implementing recycling programs, awareness campaigns, and strict waste disposal regulations. Individuals are encouraged to reduce waste, segregate garbage, and support local initiatives. Collective responsibility is essential to ensure clean and healthy urban environments. Only through joint efforts, sustainable practices, and public participation can urban waste problems be effectively managed.
