He was born on 30th October, 1887 in Calcutta, Bengal when India was under the British rule. His notable parents were Upendrakishore Ray chowdhury, an eminent Bengal writer and Bidhumukhi Devi. He was a good student from his childhood. He attended city college school and later he graduated with double honours in Physics chemistry from Presidency College. This versatile genius was trained in Photography and printing technology from England. Side by side he was a writer, a illustrator, a photographer and also the publisher of "Sandesh", the famous children's magazine. This man of letters is famous for his "nonsense' rhymes in Bengali, eg. Abol Tabol and Pagla Dashu, Ha Ja Ba Ra La etc. The great person left his mortal frame on 10th September, 1923 at the age of 35 only. Such a man is above praise, criticism and beyond comparison. ভারত মাতার অনেক রত্ন সন্তান আছে। তাঁদের মধ্যে সুকুমার রায় ছিলেন বাংলা শিশু সাহিত্যের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ কবি ও লেখক। তিনি ১৮৮৭ সালের ৩০শে অক্টোবর বাংলার কলকাতা শহরে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন, যখন ভারত ব্রিটিশ শাসনের অধীনে ছিল। তাঁর উল্লেখযোগ্য পিতা-মাতা ছিলেন উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায় চৌধুরী, একজন প্রখ্যাত বাঙালি লেখক এবং বিধুমুখী দেবী। তিনি ছোটবেলা থেকেই একজন ভালো ছাত্র ছিলেন। তিনি সিটি কলেজ স্কুলে পড়াশোনা করেন এবং পরে প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজ থেকে পদার্থবিদ্যা ও রসায়নে ডাবল অনার্স নিয়ে স্নাতক হন। এই বহুমুখী প্রতিভাবান ব্যক্তি ইংল্যান্ড থেকে ফটোগ্রাফি এবং মুদ্রণ প্রযুক্তিতে প্রশিক্ষণ নিয়েছিলেন। পাশাপাশি তিনি একজন লেখক, একজন চিত্রশিল্পী, একজন ফটোগ্রাফার এবং বিখ্যাত শিশু পত্রিকা "সন্দেশ"-এর প্রকাশকও ছিলেন। এই সাহিত্যিক বাংলায় তাঁর "ননসেন্স" ছড়ার জন্য বিখ্যাত, যেমন - আবোল তাবোল এবং পাগলা দাশু, হ জ ব র ল ইত্যাদি। এই মহান ব্যক্তি মাত্র ৩৫ বছর বয়সে ১৯২৩ সালের ১০ই সেপ্টেম্বর তাঁর নশ্বর দেহ ত্যাগ করেন। এমন মানুষ প্রশংসা, সমালোচনা এবং তুলনার ঊর্ধ্বে। যদিও তিনি আর নেই, তিনি আমাদের হৃদয়ে ছিলেন, আছেন এবং থাকবেন।
